Great Little Magazine; Great Value for Readers
As a loyal reader of Shock Totem since its first issue, I figured it was about time I gave them a review. This magazine is a great bargain for anyone who has a taste for the darker side of fiction, not always out & out horror or gore, but definitely dark. It's also perfect for those of you who are fans of "WTF Art", any type of art that leaves that particular American colloquialism as your very first reaction. Now, it is a magazine, a collection of several short stories, interviews, book & movie reviews, with an occasional poem or two, AND, as with all magazines, you may not absolutely love, or necessarily like-a-lot EVERY piece within its covers. However, I GUARANTEE you will find at least one feature you will never forget. In Issue 3, for instance, there's a little gem titled "The Meat Forest" by John Haggerty. Wonderfully surreal in verbal imagery & saturated with originality, this is both a great horror story on the surface & a cutting commentary on the nature of life,...

A good collection for fans of dark fiction
Another enjoyable publication from Shock Totem. The writing is good throughout. This collection has obviously been put together with care and attention to detail. Layout and design is impressive, and there's a nice, easy-to-read font.Favourite stories included `Mr. Many Faces', a heart-breaking tale which stays in the mind a long time after reading. `Drift' is an unnerving story about snow, and is nicely done. I enjoyed the vivid scenery in `The Meat Forest'. The story makes you wonder what you would do in the same situation. The meat forest and prison camp were such great settings that I thought it would be great if the author included them in a longer story, maybe a novel or film script. `Duval Street' is another good one - I actually copied three of the sentences into my notebook, because I liked the sound of them so much. I'll be re-reading that story many times. The non-fiction is interesting, and I especially liked `Voracious Black', a piece about...

An Excellent Volume of Sublime Malevolence
Culturally, we tend to adopt a dualist approach to the holiday season, bookending our naughty/nice deliberations between those representative yin-yang extremes of the color spectrum, Black Friday and White Christmas. Perhaps this is the kind of simplicity we need to get through the Exodus-rivaling travel, wallet-flogging, and family intrigue, not to mention all the trite, overdone bitching over department store Christmas muzak casually rattled off ad nauseam--as if buying toilet paper to the strains of Kelly Clarkson's latest breakup anthem back in October had been some kind of transcendental, edifying experience! Which is to say, amidst yuletide chaos tradition is employed as a small oasis, and we seize upon it for whatever serenity it can offer us.Now imagine you're standing next to the tinsel-festooned tree in your mother's living room, nursing a second eggnog and wondering how long you can resist those Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer sugar cookies. The Burl Ives is on...

A must read for any horror lover!
You wouldn't think you would be able to combine horror and the Holidays but I guess that is what makes it "Twisted". This is a must read for any horror reader. If your looking for something new from some up and coming authors, it is worth the 99 cents. Then if you like it make sure you download the others...

Building on the momentum...
In July of 2009 a new twice-yearly magazine came out that excited me. It was called Shock Totem: Curious Tales of the Macabre and Twisted. I purchased that little digest-sized publication, dove in, and loved the experience of reading the wicked stories within. In every way this new venture excited me; for too long, dark fiction has been under represented in the literary print market. This was a shining beacon in the perpetual darkness.Months passed. Then a year. Finally, this past July, the second issue of Shock Totem came out. Sure, that's a long time between issues, but let me tell you, it was well worth the wait.Issue two of Shock Totem just might be the best magazine I've ever had the opportunity to read. Unlike the first issue, in which I found there to be a couple duds, there were none such here. Every story tipped the scales upward towards fantastic. For my review of the first issue, I simply pointed out my favorite two stories, seeing as I...

Continues to Impress
I'll start off by being honest, I don't think issue 2 of Shock Totem quite lives up to the standard set by the debut issues. But then again, that was a pretty high standard to meet. I do however find issue 2 to be impressive, the quality of the authors involved is astounding, the nonfiction pieces--especially an interview with James Newman and a really fascinating essay by Mercedes M. Yardley--interesting and readable. It seemed to me almost that the majority of the stories in this one had some kind of gimmick or hook--a Survivor-type reality show where you really have to survive, searching for the dead on Facebook, a dead solider brought back as a cyborg, an online video that drives folks insane--and sometimes the hook works beautifully but other times I felt the hook was all the story had going for it.Still, what this second issue showed me was that the first issue was not a fluke. Wood and company are committed to publishing quality fiction, and what I consider...

A three-ring circus of the macabre
It seems short fiction markets are a fleeting thing. Some crop up out of nowhere, then disappear as quickly as they came. The ones that survive are to be commended--and read. Shock Totem came out with its first paperback issue in the summer of 2009, and this summer sees its fourth edition () coming out as a physical copy. But, at the same time, Shock Totem #1 has been re-released as an e-book. An insanely affordable one at that, with an asking price of only $1.99 on the Kindle Store. How could I resist? Now, with the digital release, a couple things have been left out. Namely the reviews and artwork. But, the stories and interviews are intact, and that's the meat of this publication as far as I'm concerned, anyway. After a brief introduction from its editor, K...

Stunning Debut
Wow, that's all I have to say. Okay, you twisted my arm, I'll say more. This was a hell of a debut issue for a publication. The quality of the writing was beyond impressive. What was perhaps even more impressive was the fact that the stories were all so diverse, different types of horror written in a variety of styles. It made for fascinating reading, sort of like a great anthology and not just a magazine. My favorite tales were Mercedes M. Yardley's hilarious "Murder for Beginners" and Kurt Newton's fascinating and brilliantly structured "Thirty-Two Scenes from a Dead Hooker's Mouth". Other stand-outs were "Below the Surface" by Pam L. Wallace and "The Music Box" by T.L. Morganfield. There were also some really great interviews in there, be sure to check out the one with cool cat John Skipp, and K. Allen Wood had a wonderful introductory essay called "Stronger than Friction" that gives some insight into the magazine and the folks behind it. I also really enjoyed that there...

Discovering Shock Totem
I recently read the first issue of Shock Totem: Curious Tales of the Macabre and Twisted. I had picked up the first four issues at the NEHW booth at the Hebron Harvest Fair in September. The magazine was first published in 2009 and Publisher K. Allen Wood explains in the editorial how the magazine was created and the different names they had for the magazine before settling on Shock Totem. It's a lot better than Papercut Stigmata or Bleeding Penis Pens.Volume one includes stories about vengeance meted out by childhood toys ("The Music Box"). Author T.I. Morganfield captures the magic of those special toys a person has as they grow up. As you read about Snowflake, you can't help but think about a darker version of Toy Story. Morganfield even mentions in the "Howling Through the Keyhole" section of the magazine that he took the conflict between the toys in the Pixar movie in a "darker direction."In "Murder for Beginners," the reader is lost as the...
