Good general manual
After reading some of the bad reviews for this manual, I bought it. The Haynes manual is good for the price and compares with all of the other Haynes manuals in general quality. It is certainly better than the other CH****N auto repair manual that uses the same engine pictures no matter what car you have. The manual actually has pictures and diagrams from the referenced car. This manual has enough information for the 123 body style diesel Mercedes owner with average intelligence. The engine / body / electrical and systems information is enough to get you through most diagnoses and repairs. It does NOT cover rebuilding the transmission or rear differential, just servicing (what do you expect for $15.00). If you are going to perform a rebuild on these components, you would be stupid not to have the shop manuals anyway. The pictures are not too clear (B/W) and it could be improved if they had more exploded line diagrams and drawings for the more complex items. Overall this book and...

A Good Value For the Money
If you plan on doing serious work on your Mercedes, this is NOT the only manual you'll need. It is, however, a useful maintenance reference that nicely fills the gap between the owner's manual and the factory service CD. It's also useful for alternate procedures that don't assume you have the special tools that the factory procedures require. The pictures are clear, and the diagrams are mostly lifted directly from the factory service manual.

Great Cars ... Great DVDs!
If you are a true car buff you will welcome the availability of this set on DVD. It IS a real history lesson about the origins, development and triumphs of each of these marques. The history is very well presented (not boring), with great archival footage and each disc has additional rarely-seen bonus material (such as factory promo films introducing the 1953 Corvette to GM dealers). Whether you are a rabid "car nut" or completely unfamilar with any of the cars in this series, you will learn something new in these DVDs. It was also great to see man of the very rare antique models held in private collections being driven for the camera, and not just sitting in a museum. After all, isn't that what great cars are all about? ...To be driven! The videography, production and naration are top-notch. Well worth the price and a set that will get repeated viewing by car fans.I only hope they also make the other programs in this series available soon on DVD.

I'm torn, but I give it a 3...
...and three stars is pushing it. I gave it three because it exists, and not much else does that tried to cover a comprehensive history of cars. However, it falls short. Firstly, the episodes are a half hour, if that. Modern variations of some cars, like AMG Mercedes, are shown in brief snips, but not covered. Finally, if you are a big enough car nut to rent a disc like this, you want the intricate details of each product line (for instance, specific engine types or limited run racing versions of a Corvette), and they really just skim. I commend them for trying, but dont go into this rental thinking you are going to learn much.

Good Videos For The Car Enthusiast
The only problem is that the Videos are too short! An auto enthusiast will want to see them all. They are an excellent summary of he Cars and Auto companies they are about. They are very enjoyable.

Covers '71-'80, Disappointingly
You don't get a lot of book for your money with this one. The cover illustration ...is really nice, and it goes downhill from there. The Chilton book is actually more useful than this one! (Guess what: It's also at least twice as thick.)Haynes usually excels -- but with Mercedes they've really left us in a lurch. As of this writing (7/25/01), they don't cover the 80s R107 and W126 models, including the 380SL, SEC and SEL models now quite affordable (and loved) by tinkerers.

After launching a a four-cylinder turbodiesel engine in the 2013 GLK-Class crossover next year, Mercedes could make that engine available in other vehicles. “We brought a four-cylinder gasoline engine to the U. S. Why shouldn’t we do that with a four-cylinder diesel.

The Mercedes Concept Style Coupé (CSC) has received its debut at the Beijing motor show . The model previews the forthcoming Mercedes CLA compact saloon, which was confirmed for production at the show today by Mercedes boss Dieter Zetsche. However, this CSC show car hints that Mercedes’ new entry-level saloon will be 47mm longer, a considerable 121mm wider and 47mm lower than the C-class saloon. Although Mercedes is quick to point out that the CSC is a one-off show car, Autocar sources privy to the final look of the CLA confirm that its styling is largely faithful to the production car. Advancing the look first established by the F800 Style concept at the 2010 Geneva motor show, the CSC is described by Mercedes design boss Gorden Wagener as setting “a new benchmark for design in the executive segment. The CSC has clear visual links to the larger CLS — a car whose success as a stylistic figurehead for the rest of the Mercedes line-up and at showroom level heavily influenced the decision to add the CLA to the line-up. Among the CLA’s four-door rivals will be a saloon version of the new Audi A3 , also due next year, and a secret four-door version of the BMW 1-series , which is currently undergoing conceptual development with a view to introduction in 2015. These official measurements also make it 345mm longer, the same width and 35mm lower than the new Mercedes A-class - a car with which the CLA shares its platform, chassis and driveline architecture. Long billed as a junior CLS, the CLA will sit below the Mercedes C-class saloon on price and features in the marques line-up. In production guise, the CLA will offer the choice of standard front-wheel drive or optional four-wheel drive. Based on Mercedes’ new MFA platform, it has a 2699mm wheelbase — 59mm shorter than the C-class but the same as the A-class.
