A thorough manual, but limited to only the six-cyliner SOHC.
This manual is a typical Haynes publication: not a complete "factory" service manual, but a very thorough guide for the DIY'er. Easy to read, it includes a "British to American" translation guide in the front of the manual to eliminate any possible confusion with technical terms and part names. If you own the 4.5 or 6.0 engine, however, you may want to search for another manual.

Good place to start
If you've bought an old merc as I have, this is a good place to start. But, you need to make sure that the exact car you have is covered, or otherwise it is a useless book. I found it really useful for basic repair, as well as showing me the process that the shop will go through, so I know if the price they quote is fair or not.

Amazing Amazon
After Checking my local Auto Stores to buy a repair manual for the car I just purchased, I moved on to internet locations. I found that the prices on used books at all places that offered them, to be the same as the price I paid for this book here. Actually I paid a couple dollars less. then when I recieved the book, I realized one other great selling feature: THE BOOK WAS BRAND NEW! Sealed in it's original wrapper and a HARD COVER copy! Again I thought I was getting a soft cover book. To say the least, I'm happy and highly pleased. Thanks.

Disappointing
I've relied on the thoroughness and quality of Haynes manuals for two other vehicles so I was really disappointed in this one. The quality SEEMS to be there but it is not at all thorough. It does include a broad array of topics including "windshield washer water contact areas" (with measurements down to the last millimeter - WHY?!) but when it comes to the specific jobs I need to do, I couldn't find: any specs, diagrams or other info about the vacuum system, how to test and troublshoot the temperature sending units and gauges (to get the fan clutch to engage), how to check the vacuum modulator on the auto. transmission (plenty of info for the manual), how to get the tachometer working, how to get the fuel gauge/sending unit working etc. Maybe I just got unlucky and all the car's problems are rare, but this manual has not helped me with a SINGLE one so far. I'm confident that the book will be of value for future projects on the car but I'm going to have to turn elsewhere to...

Mercedes Cylinder


It is the AMG Cylinder Management cylinder shut-off system in particular – completely newly developed by Mercedes-AMG – that significantly improves efficiency: cylinders two, three, five and eight are cut off under partial load, which lowers fuel... The compensating elements are integrated into the cylinder head, and keep the intake and exhaust valves of cylinders two, three, five and eight closed when cylinder shut-off is active. The AMG main menu in the instrument cluster informs the driver whether cylinder shut-off is active, and whether the engine is currently running in four or eight-cylinder mode. Moreover, deciding in favour of a large-displacement, naturally-aspirated eight-cylinder unit with cylinder shut-off resolves the conflict of aims between high output/torque delivery and low fuel consumption figures. This not only enables the load-change losses of the four deactivated cylinders to be reduced, but also increases the efficiency of the four remaining cylinders. 4 litres per 100 km and CO emissions of 195 grams per kilometre (NEDC combined), the naturally-aspirated AMG V8 engine comes in at or below the level of its competitors, however these are unable to match either the output or torque of the SLK 55... The cylinder shut-off function is available over a wide engine speed range from 800 to 3 600 r/min if the driver has selected transmission mode “C” – Controlled Efficiency. This is made possible by intelligent interaction within the highly effective engine management system, with 16 hydraulically compensating elements and a complex oil supply system in the cylinder head.

Hi the MAF that i put on the car that fixed the idle was a borrowed unit,i put my original MAF back on and left the car for 2 days but forgot to turn off the radio which drained the battery. if it is coming up with a MAF fault code & air intake temp (also part of the MAF) then its almost certainly the MAF at fault. Hi i have a 2000 E200 Mercedes,2 Ltr 4 cylinder,it has a surging idle between(NNN) NNN-NNNNpm and it comes and goes during idling (hot & cold). Now you have fitted a good MAF sensor, the ECU still has the adaptation data stored from the bad MAF. the ECU is self learning & adapts itself, when a MAF starts to slowly & progressively give false readings, the ECU adapts to this. with a scan test after it droped the out put signal from the MAF it came up with the codes for-MAF,and AIR INTAKE TEMP SENSOR. after jump starting the car it started and ran good,it idled how it should and it drove good with good throttle response. now the ECU has been reset it cant cope with the incorrect readings from the air mass sensor which is suddenly way out as far as the ECU can see. If fitting the MAF sensor has cured your initial problem, it could be that the adaptation data in the ECU is causing it to run rough now. i tried an air frlow meter from a good running car and it cured the idle but when i go to rev the motor it hesitates and backfires through the intake pipe and revs realy slowly. as a 1st step I would get the vehicle plugged in to a diagonstic tool to reset this adaptation data with a good MAF on.  . The straightening, panel beating and finishing of all the bare steel body work to remove years of minor (and some major) panel damage was meticulously carried out. Thankfully, almost all these chassis and panel parts are available either NOS or as pattern pieces as a result of a very active worldwide Mercedes-Benz restoration market. As with any old car, this Mercedes held a few surprises — both pleasant and unpleasant.
